Maybe you should just pay off your debt and now worry about bankruptcy.

Just like criminal charges, no debt will go away after a certain amount of time. I don’t know where you got that information from.

Now bankruptcy will typically go away in seven years.

If you file for bankruptcy it will affect you if you apply for a mortgage even after the 6 years.

No one HAS to file. And creditors don’t always remove their entries just because you file, so if you do file, you need to send the credit reporting agencies copies of the discharge order so they can update your credit report. It doesn’t automatically clear in 6 years. In fact it could be absent for years and then suddenly show up because someone bought the debt.
